Mahogany Bookcase

A commission undertaken for a private client for their home office. The piece is made from very well seasoned Mahogany (6-7% m/c) I found the timber in a yard in London. They acquired the stack from another yard that went bust. The timber was not on their computer system and it was pure chance I spoke to an employee who knew the existence of the 33 cubic metres of mahogany. The boards were black with age and measured 16' x 1.5' wide, so not fresh cut from the forest!
The carcases is put together using hand cut dovetails and all the doors are mortice & tennoned together. The backs are made of quarter sawn tongue & grooved oak. The shelves are also oak, lipped on the front edges with mahogany. The bookcase measures 15' x 8'4" x 1'10". The finish is hand French polished and then waxed. All fittings are solid brass.
